The YapStack desktop window following the chapters: a live recording with a REC timer, amber waveform and transcript bubbles (your microphone on the right, system audio on the left); the Rewind menu recovering earlier audio above a Processing prior audio divider; an AI answer with timestamp citations beside notes and action items; the command palette searching every session for workspaces; dictation pasting cleaned-up text into another app; the chat model switched to a local model; and two devices syncing an edited action item through a relay that stores only ciphertext.

Record any call without inviting a bot

YapStack captures your microphone and your computer's audio as two separate streams, so nothing joins the meeting and nobody gets a bot notification. Speech becomes text on your own machine as people talk.

No bot joins your call. If it plays sound on your computer, YapStack can record it.

  • Zoom
  • Google Meet
  • Microsoft Teams
  • Slack huddles
  • Discord
  • Browser calls

YapStack listens to your own audio devices. It does not connect to any meeting service.

  • Capture modes: Mixed, Microphone Only, System Only.
  • Lines are labelled You (mic) or Other (system audio). This is not speaker identification.
  • English and 24 other European languages, detected automatically.

Forgot to hit record? Rewind and keep it

While YapStack is capturing, it keeps the last few minutes of audio in memory. Start a session from that point in the past, and the audio you would have missed is saved and transcribed in the background while live transcription carries on. Buffered audio you never use is discarded and never written to disk.

Command Option RCtrl Alt RNew Session (Rewind)

  • Shortcut ⌘⌥R on macOS, Ctrl+Alt+R on Windows.
  • Keep the whole buffer or just the last few minutes.

AI notes you can check against the recording

Ask the meeting a question, or use one click for a summary, key points, action items or minutes. Every answer carries timestamp citations that jump to that moment in the transcript and audio. When the AI renames, tags, files or saves something for you, you can undo it.

  • One-click actions: Summarize, Key Points, Action Items, Meeting Minutes.
  • Citations are timestamp chips. Click one to jump to that line and play it.
  • Undo on every action the AI takes.
  • Live Insights can comment on the transcript while the meeting is running. Off by default.

Find anything you've ever said

One shortcut searches every folder, session, note, transcript line and dictation at once. Nested folders, tags and pins keep the archive in order. Give a folder some 'Context for AI' and the assistant knows what that folder is for.

Command KCtrl KSearch everything

  • Nested folders, tags, pins and drag-and-drop.
  • AI suggests a folder for each session. Accept it or pick another.
  • Copy or export a transcript as Markdown or plain text: all of it, just your side, or just theirs.

Dictate into any app

Hold a shortcut, speak, let go, and the text is pasted at your cursor in email, Slack, a doc or your code editor. Speech recognition runs on your device, so dictation works offline. Give a slot an AI profile and it cleans up filler and false starts before pasting.

Default dictation slots and their shortcuts
Raw DictationControl Shift DCtrl Shift D
Clean & FocusControl Shift CCtrl Shift C
EngineerControl Shift XCtrl Shift X
  • Hold to talk, or switch to Toggle.
  • Output to Paste, Clipboard Only or New Note. Paste goes through the clipboard and replaces what you had copied.
  • Every dictation is kept in a searchable history.

Your AI, a local model, or none at all

Connect a cloud provider, or run a model on your own machine. Transcription never needs AI, so you can skip it entirely. If a connection fails, YapStack tells you. It never quietly sends your text somewhere else.

  • AI Connections and Profiles: pick a different model for chat, actions and each dictation slot.
  • Use a local model and no text leaves your machine.
  • Every AI feature is optional.

Sync across devices through a server you run

Sync is off by default. Turn it on and your devices sync through a small relay you host yourself, with content encrypted on your device before it uploads. The relay stores ciphertext it cannot read.

  • Relay never sees transcripts, notes, titles, audio, AI prompts or your password.
  • New devices are approved by comparing a security code on both screens.
  • The relay runs on your own server with Docker.

What leaves your machine

Speech-to-text runs on your computer, and your audio, transcripts and notes are saved to your disk. Here is the complete list of what does use the network.

Normal use
Your audio, transcripts and notes never leave your machine. The app checks for updates, downloads its speech model once on first use, and sends anonymous usage stats with no content, which you can turn off.
AI features (optional)
If you connect a cloud AI provider, the text you send it goes to that provider. Use a local model and nothing leaves.
Sync (optional, off by default)
Encrypted changes and encrypted audio go to the relay you run. It sees account and device metadata, never your content.

Diagram of YapStack's data flow. Inside your machine: microphone and system audio go to YapStack, which transcribes on-device and stores audio, transcripts and notes on your disk; the Rewind buffer stays in memory. Connections that leave the machine: an update check to GitHub Releases, a one-time speech model download from Hugging Face, an optional AI provider that receives only the text you send, and an optional end-to-end-encrypted sync relay that you host.

What stays on your machine, and what can leave it.

Recording consent and compliance with local law are your responsibility.

Free and open source, for good

YapStack is free, with no feature paywall. The source is public under AGPL-3.0-only, so you can read exactly what it does with your audio. LICENSING.md makes four commitments about how any commercial side will work.

  • AGPL-3.0-only, no CLA

We never collect relicensing rights, so the project cannot be switched to a proprietary license.

  • Limits, never features

Any hosted tier may differ only in quantitative limits. No feature is ever withheld from the open-source build.

  • Self-hosting is the top tier, forever

A self-hosted relay defaults to unlimited everything.

  • Zero phone-home

The relay's only outbound calls go to the storage and database you configure. It cannot be remotely disabled.

Each feature has its own page with the details, shortcuts and limits.

Questions people ask

Does a bot join my Zoom, Google Meet or Teams calls?
No. YapStack records your microphone and your computer's system audio directly, so it works with any meeting app without adding a participant to the call.
Does it work offline?
Yes, after a one-time speech model download. Recording, transcription, dictation, notes and search all run locally. You only need a connection for cloud AI or sync, and both are optional.
Is YapStack really free?
Yes. It is free and open source under AGPL-3.0-only, with no feature paywall and no YapStack account. Cloud AI needs your own provider account, or you can use a local model.
Which languages does it transcribe?
English and 24 other European languages, detected automatically. Other languages are not supported yet.
Does it know who is speaking?
No. Lines are labelled Me or Them based on which audio source they came from: your microphone or your computer's audio. It does not identify individual speakers.
What if I forget to press record?
Press ⌘⌥R (Ctrl+Alt+R on Windows). YapStack keeps the last 5 minutes of audio in memory by default, up to 10, and starts the session from that point. Unused buffered audio is discarded and never saved.
